Mustafa Avcı completed his undergraduate degree in the Department of Economics at BoÄŸaziçi University. After his graduation, he changed track and earned his master's degree in ethnomusicology at ITU MIAM. In 2007, he was accepted as a graduate student at New York University GSAS Music Department and got his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology in 2015. His research focuses on gender, music, dance, and the soundscapes of the Ottoman Empire and Contemporary Turkey.
Currently, Dr. Avcı is working on a monograph on the music of the Ottoman Diaspora in America (1890-1970). He received research grants from various institutions such as Social Science Research Council, Society for Ethnomusicology, and New York University. As a contemporary artist and composer, he participated in multiple events, including the Mardin Biennial, with his installations and compositions.
In addition, as a film music composer, he composed the music score for Yuva, which made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Avcı won the "Best Original Score" award at the 30th Ankara International Film Festival in 2019. He is still working as a part-time faculty member at at Koç University Sociology department and Computational Social Sciences Master's Program.
