Hello
A Bit About Me
I studied economics at Boğaziçi University before moving into ethnomusicology with an MA from ITU MIAM and a PhD from New York University (2007–2015). My research explores gender, music, dance, and the soundscapes of the Ottoman Empire and contemporary Turkey, and I am currently completing a monograph on the music of the Ottoman diaspora in America (1890–1970). I have received grants from the Social Science Research Council, the Society for Ethnomusicology, and NYU. Alongside scholarship, I work as a contemporary artist and composer, with installations shown at the Istanbul and Mardin Biennials, and most recently at the SACO Biennial in Chile. As a film composer, I wrote the score for Yuva, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and won Best Original Score at the 30th Ankara International Film Festival. I currently teach in the Sociology Department and the Computational Social Sciences Master’s Program at Koç University.
